Periodontal Abscess

periodontal abscess

A periodontal abscess is located in the gums, not the bone, and it is caused by periodontal disease. If untreated, it can destroy the underlying bone by creating craters in the bone around the teeth. This only makes your dental problem worse.

A periodontal abscess is a small ball of pus with a surrounding area of inflamed gum tissue. Pus is made of liquified dead tissue, white blood cells, dead and live bacteria and is usually a pale yellow creamy consistency. Patients often have pain from the pressure of the growing gum ball so this problem should be treated promptly. In most cases, it can be treated successfully with scaling and root planing and a dental antibiotic. However, if the gum disease is severe, treatment may also involve gum surgery and/or selective dental extraction. Herbal remedies and home care will not correct this problem and it is very important to seek dental treatment.
