Periodontal Chart

periodontal chart

A periodontal chart is a very important way of tracking the progress and effects of gum disease as well as the results of periodontal treatment. Periodontal charting is usually done by a Registered Dental Hygienist, also known as an RDH for short. It is vital in showing how periodontal disease treatment has worked and keeps track of the procedure performed to aid in treatment. Think of it as a map of the mouth. It shows the thickness of the gums in different areas of the mouth so that problems areas can be seen and the treatment plan adjusted as is needed.

A periodontal chart is created from measurements taken in the mouth. Your RDH will take six measurements from around each tooth. This is done with a specially designed periodontal probe. In most patients treatment begins with a procedure known as scaling and root planing. It is suggested to patients who have periodontal pockets greater than 5 millimeters, bleeding on probing and radiographic evidence of hard calculus under the gums.

Your periodontal chart helps determine how aggressive the treatment should be. Depending on how much affect this has the disease can be treated more aggressively or with less aggression and more natural methods. A natural gum disease cure can have a great deal of usefulness if used properly. Regardless of the path of treatment, these patients are placed on a three or four month recall rather than the normal six month cycle. Scaling and root planing is repeated approximately every two years.
