periodontal procedure

Each periodontal procedure has a specific purpose and goal. Treatment almost always begins with scaling and root planing to remove calculus adhered to the roots of the teeth. This allows for the gingiva and bone to heal and naturally regenerate as best as possible. After several weeks of healing, if necessary, the tissues can be easily manipulated and surgically handled.

An important periodontal procedure is connective tissue grafting. It is very important for the underlying bone and tooth roots to be protected at all times. Much of this job is accomplished by a coral pink and bound down non-movable tissue called attached gingiva. For various reasons, attached gingiva can be lost and leave the periodontal tissues below exposed. This can be corrected by taking a piece of connective tissue from the palate and surgically inserting it over the area of concern.

Not every periodontal procedure is aimed at the correction of gum disease. With the increasing popularity of Cosmetic Dentistry, many treatments are being modified and/or being developed to improve a patient's smile. Gum contouring is one of these. This is a minor surgery where the gingival tissues are shaped to symmetrically frame the crowns of the teeth in a smile. It often involves removing extra gums that are covering and hiding the teeth.
