PerioMed

information from the  Atlanta Dental Group PC

periomed

Periomed is a viscous fluoride gel that is used to decrease gum inflammation, reduce tooth sensitivity and prevent tooth decay. Our dentists suggest that when its being used for periodontal disease, that patients brush a small amount of the gel into the teeth rather than rinsing with the gel. This significantly reduces the amount of the medication being used and a bottle will often last six months rather than a few weeks. An interdental brush is a great dental tool which can be used to brush the gel in between the teeth.

Although Periomed does not cure tooth grinding, it can help a patient reduce the discomfort being experienced. Patients who suffer with bruxism often have sensitive teeth from gum recession and exposure of the tooth roots. The sensitivity is often significantly reduced with a few weeks of using this fluoride gel. The gel can even be inserted inside a grinding appliance while the appliance is being worn.

When a patient is not able to tolerate a tooth whitening gel placed in custom dental whitening trays, one week of wearing the trays with PerioMed often decreases the sensitivity to the extent that the whitening treatment can be done. Cancer patients who have had radiation exposure to the head and neck tend to have dry mouths and an increase in dental cavities. Wearing the fluoride gel in modified whitening trays during the night can often prevent the destruction of the patient's teeth.
