permanent gold tooth

If you look in dentist's mouth, you will often find a permanent gold tooth. Gold is a wonderful dental material. Because of the wonderful properties of gold, a gold crown wears with time and allows the crown to gradually fit into the mouth. Porcelain crowns do not wear and break with continued biting forces whereas a permanent gold tooth will not do this.

Gold is hypo-allergenic. It is extremely unusual for a permanent gold tooth to cause an allergic reaction. When a permanent gold tooth is highly polished, the gums often grown up onto the surface of the crown.

Porcelain crowns require a great deal of time and expertise to make. When a porcelain crown has a supporting metal understructure, two dental technicians are usually needed to make the one porcelain crown. A permanent gold tooth is often quickly constructed by one dental technician rather than two. This decreases the labor costs to make this dental restoration and often compensates for the increased material costs.

Statistically, a permanent gold tooth lasts ( 14 years ) almost twice as long as a porcelain crown ( 7 years ). This makes it a good long term investment.

A highly polished permanent gold tooth is beautiful and gold crowns have been cherished by humans since ancient times. It has only been recently with the quest for eternal youth that a permanent gold tooth has fallen out of favor.

A permanent gold tooth absorbs hot and cold, like a pot or pan taken from the stove or refrigerator. It is not unusual for a tooth under a permanent gold tooth to be sensitive for a few months before the tooth adapts to the temperature changes in the crown.

When a tooth has a root canal, there is no longer any thermal sensation in that tooth. A root canal tooth also becomes very brittle and can break. A permanent gold tooth is ideal for a root canal tooth because a root canal tooth does not have hot and cold sensitivity.

Gold has the color of gold and some patients consider this a disadvantage of a permanent gold tooth.
