plaque

Many people have heard of plaque due to mouthwash and toothbrush commercials, but few people understand what it is, how it forms or what problems it causes. It is basically a slimy yet stick film of bacteria that clings to your teeth. If you do not keep good oral hygiene habits this can build up and form tartar, otherwise known as calculus. It builds up naturally in your mouth after meals but it is important to keep it in check by keeping good oral hygiene habits by brushing and flossing regularly.

Plaque is dangerous because it can end up harming your oral health. Once it builds up and creates tartar you are in trouble. Tartar is a substance so hard that it can only be removed by your dentist or dental hygienist. Build-up also means a highly increased risk of cavities and gum disease, which can cause swollen and bleeding gums as well as tooth loss. That is why proper brushing and flossing techniques are so vital. Tooth and gum care prevent this build up.

The build up of this nasty plaque can be easily prevented. It is best to use a brush with medium strength bristles, so that it is hard enough to remove the build-up but not so hard that it damages your gums. Floss first, making sure not to saw against your gums. Then apply a moderate amount of toothpaste to the bristles of your toothbrush. Brush in small circular or back and forth motions, making sure to get along the gum line where it builds up the most. It is also a good idea to brush the tongue, either with the brush itself or a specialized tongue scraper, bacteria grows easily here and brushing your tooth can kill a large amount of the bacteria growing in your mouth.
