Pregnancy and bleeding gums are related. The many hormonal changes during pregnancy cause many pregnant women to have dental and gum problems that they didn't have before they became pregnant. One of the things that happens is that the gingiva around the teeth are much more sensitive to irritation. They swell, become inflamed, turn red, bleed and are often painful. These reactions are to the dental plaque surrounding the teeth. In turn the swollen gum tissue causes more entrapment of food and then more swelling again. It is a vicious cycle.
Pregnancy and bleeding gums both can cause a woman grief. Many dentists believe that pregnant women should have three, or at least two, dental cleanings during the time that women are pregnant. Dental home care should be excellent. Most dentists suggest that their patients brush and floss three times a day and excellent dental home care is even more important during pregnancy. Eating well with foods rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin D and calcium also helps.
Since pregnancy and bleeding gums are associated it makes sense to take really good care of yourself before getting pregnant. Having really clean teeth and healthy gums reduces the gum problem that so many pregnant woman have. Additionally, if all your dental work is completed before your pregnancy, there will be no need for dental x-rays with your cleanings during the nine months you are carrying your child. However, emergency dental care should always be performed since failing to do so can stress your body and your baby. University studies have clearly shown that problems with your gums can affect your baby.
