A pregnancy toothache is just one more thing that a pregnant woman can add to her list of aggravations. Many pregnant women have dental problems due to the tremendous hormonal and physical changes associated with the developing fetus. Fortunately, most obstetricians allow emergency dental work all throughout the nine month period and regular dental care in the third trimester.
It is very common for an older woman to say that she had a pregnancy toothache and that her teeth got soft when she had her baby. Once they are formed, teeth do not change their make up and do not get soft. However, the gums can swell in pregnant women and the pregnancy gingivitis traps food between the gums and teeth. This can cause tooth decay and dental pain.
It is usually a wisdom tooth that causes a pregnancy toothache. Wisdom teeth are hard to clean and often trap food around them even in normal situations. In many cases, the gums swell and the opposite tooth starts biting into the swollen gums. This is called pericornitis. If there's already tooth decay in a wisdom tooth, it's easy for the decay to get worse and grow causing a toothache.
