Tooth destruction from bulimia is primarily from the stomach acid in the vomit. The vomit contains Hydrochloric acid (HCL) which is the primary acid causing the destruction. Here's a purging tip to help you avoid this problem. If the hydrochloric acid is neutralized and removed immediately, the effects of bulimia on a patient's teeth is reduced.
In chemistry, bases neutralize acids. Bicarbonate of Soda (Arm and Hammer Baking Soda) can be dissolved in water and stored in a bottle in your refrigerator. If this solution is swished in your mouth immediately upon vomiting, it neutralizes the hydrochloric acid and reduces the effects of bulimia.
Fill a soup pot with water and place some bicarbonate of soda in it. Slowly increase the temperature and continue to add bicarbonate of soda while it still dissolves. The purpose of slowly adding the bicarbonate is to saturate the water with as much of the this base as the water can take. When the white bicarbonate falls to the bottom of the pan and does not dissolve, the water is saturated. Turn the heat off and let the water cool to room temperature. You can add Cool Aid or Crytal Lite to give it some color and taste.
