Relining Dentures

Relining dentures is an important part of wearing dentures. Over time the human mouth changes, generally the jaw bone shrinks. Since the resin that forms dentures is hard and it will not change with your mouth, causing the dentures to loosen and move around or even cause discomfort. If you are having problems eating or talking with your dentures, it's a good idea to have them relined as soon as possible, if the cause you any discomfort. Generally, dentures need to be relined every two to five years.

There are several different techniques for relining dentures, two main types, each with two methods. The best technique is called a hard reline, which can be done either as a chairside reline or a laboratory reline. A chairside reline takes around an hour, depending on the severity of the situation. The dentist applies a putty on the dentures after cutting some of the dentures base off. This putty is used both as a new impression and the actual material for the relining. Once it's heat cured in the dentist office the dentures should be ready for use. A laboratory reline is a better technique but unfortunately takes about twenty-four hours during which the patient is not able to wear the dentures.

The other method for relining dentures is called a soft reline. This is generally not as effective as a hard reline but some situations demand its use. The permanent soft reline uses a soft gel-like substance that surrounds the gums, alleviating dentures pain. This soft material is ideal for reducing the discomofrt caused by acrylic bases. The problem with it is that the substance is less than ideal for adhesion and can cause problems while eating or talking. A temporary soft reline uses an even softer substance but should only be used when the gums are severely swollen. This is only a temporary solution, to be used only until new dentures can be fitted.
