reversing gum disease

Reversing gum disease is often possible. Periodontal disease does not have to be a permanent condition. Good oral hygiene is essential to changing the course of its progress. There are several degrees of gum disease. You may have heard of gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage that can lead to tooth loss if not treated. A dentist can often prescribe antibiotics to help gum disease. The antibiotics can be in pill form or as a topical medication that's applied directly to the diseased gums. Anti-microbial mouthwashes and special medicated toothpastes can also be prescribed.

Reversing gum disease does not necessarily require special treatments. Only in its advanced stages does periodontal disease require special surgical methods such as flap surgery. Mild forms may require special treatments such as scaling and root planing. Success must include excellent home care. The use of antibiotics only gives the infected gums a chance to heal. Proper brushing and flossing helps the healing and assists with preventing further gum disease.

Reversing gum disease can also be aided by proper diet. In fact a bad diet, combined with poor oral hygiene, is often a major factor in the progression of periodontal disease. Harmful bacteria in your mouth use sugar to spread and grow and their can be fantastic as gingivitis turns into full blown gum disease. Fruits and vegetables, as well as fiber, can help keep you healthy.
