root amputation

Root amputation is exactly what it sounds like, the amputation of the roots of a tooth. This dental procedure can only be done on a tooth with multiple roots, normally the teeth at the back of your mouth. It is also important to not that only one of the roots can be amputated, otherwise the tooth could become unstable, after all the roots of the tooth are there for a reason.

There are several possible situations that would require you to get a root amputation but it all boils down to two key reasons. The first reason for this procedure is when one particular root of a tooth has problems with reoccurring root canal failure. While root canal therapy has come along way there are still chances of failure. In this case the root is removed and a sort of filling placed in.

Another reason for root amputation is if there is a significant amount of bone loss around one root. In some cases the procedure is basically a temporary solution that allows time for bone regeneration to reoccur before a dental implant is later placed to replace the tooth. This procedure is closely related to endodontic therapy as well as a hemisection, which removes half of the entire tooth structure.
