Root Canal and Crown

root canal and crown

A root canal and crown are usually done for most teeth needing root canal therapy. A root canal tooth gets brittle and can easily break. This is why most dentists recommend that you get your dental crown as soon as possible after root canal treatment is completed. This avoids the possibility of cracking the tooth. Recent studies have also shown that bacteria in the mouth can contaminated the gutta percha in a leaky root canal.

When planned ahead of time, Dr. Charles Chung often does a root canal and crown in one visit. With today's root canal techniques, many dentists do multiple procedures in one visit to reduce the number of times a patient has return to the dental office. This also cuts down on the number of times a patient has to visit the dentist for necessary care. Since it takes a week for the crown to be made in a dental laboratory, the patient only returns on additional time to install the crown.

The only down side of doing a root canal and crown in one visit is the additional costs that are normally spread out over several visits. Most root canal teeth also require a core build up to strengthen the tooth to better hold the crown. Many patients do not need to be numbed on the second visit because the crown delivery is relatively comfortable.
