Information about a root canal cover up is outdated and is based upon old root canal techniques done decades ago. Before 1865 most surgery patients died from subsequent infections after surgery. British surgeon Joseph Lister changed this in 1865 by performing clean surgeries. Things have changed, techniques have changed, time has gone by and surgery today is much safer. Modern root canal therapy has dramatically improved and can not be compared to the barbaric methods used in the past.
Most of the information about a root canal cover up comes from Dr. Weston Price and later from a book reviewing Dr. Price's work but written by another dentist, Dr.George E. Meinig. However, this root canal information was based upon old imprecise root canal techniques. Today, ultrasonic instruments combined with antibiotic pastes are used to clean out the microscopic ends of root tips and help avoid chronic dental infections. New sonar locators find the exact end of a root so that the entire length can be filled and sealed using a biocompatible material not available years ago. There are many improvements.
Leaving a decaying and dead tooth in your head because of a fear of a root canal cover up is not logical. Recent medical evidence shows that dental infections are the primary source of many medical problems and can possibly kill. Oddly enough, this was the original concern of Dr. Price. We now know that dental infections can cause heart attacks, strokes, and low birth weight babies. They cause diabetics to have higher and more abnormal blood glucose levels. All dental infections should be treated as soon as possible.
