Root Canal Failure

root canal failure

The first step in root canal failure is to consider retreating the root canal. If the original root canal treatment was not properly done, root canal retreatment usually corrects it or helps find out what caused the problem. Fortunately, most insurance companies pay for re-treatment. Another option is to have root canal surgery done. The most common root canal surgery is called an apicoectomy. Apicoectomy is a dental surgery that cuts off the end of a root. In most cases, the problem that caused the failure is at the very end of one or more of its roots. An apicoectomy cuts off the end of the tooth root where the problem is and the bone usually heals.

If the root canal failure is due to a cracked root, the bad root can often be surgically removed. With the problem root removed everything often returns to normal. Most endodontic filling materials today are bio-compatible and non-allergenic. However, older fillings were irritating to the body and could cause unwanted reactions. In this case, re-treatment is the best choice. In some cases, a patient's body will attack the root canal tooth. When this occurs the tooth can be endodontically retreated or removed. However, removal and replacement with a dental bridge can be expensive so our dentists prefer to attempt saving the tooth.
