A
root canal tooth had root canal
treatment completed. After the nerve and blood vessels
inside were removed during the root
canal procedure, the tooth slowly dries up and requires a dental
crown to strengthen it. Unfortunately, it's an additional
costly dental procedure that some patients choose to delay after
having to pay for their treatment. The delay can be deadly. Because
the inside of the natural crown is hollowed out and because a
dead tooth is very dry, the
tooth is at risk of a very bad fracture.
With
time the root canal
tooth becomes brittle and can possibly
crack. It is not uncommon for teeth
with root canal therapy
to fracture in half. A cracked
tooth often have to be surgically removed and this is
especially bad because of the amount of money that was already
invested in doing the earlier root
canal treatment. It's also bad because the patient has
lost a part of his or her original body. "An ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure." applies. It is very important
to restore your tooth as soon as possible.
A root canal tooth can't feel anything and has no warning system like a normal healthy living tooth. It can become decayed and the patient often never feels any dental pain at all. With severe decay, the tooth has to be removed. Tooth decay can also strike under a crown. In many cases a damaged tooth can be saved with techniques to bind the remaining portions of the tooth together. In the case of a fracture, the roots can be sectioned and the bad ones removed. The remaining good portion can then be restored with a post and core and a root canal crown.
