Scalloped Tongue

scalloped tongue

A scalloped tongue has grooves on both sides. The grooves are impressions in the tongue made from pressing tightly into the teeth in an attempt to support an unstable jaw joint. Many patients are unaware that they are doing this until it is pointed out by a dentist or dental hygienist.

These scalloped tongue grooves are not normal and are often a sign of a TMJ which should be investigated by a knowledgeable TMJ dentist. The grooves often disappear after an appropriate TMJ appliance is made and correctly worn. The appliance takes the place of the tongue in supporting the jaws.

Another common cause of a scalloped tongue is hypothyroidism which is a decrease in thyroid gland function. There are classic indentations and grooves along the side of the tongue which cause a grooved tongue appearance. There are actual grooves appearing on the side of the tongue. Unusually, hypothyroidism is on the rise in the United States. It causes dry skin, tiredness, lowered body temperature, muscle aches, weight gain and a lot more symptoms. Many of these patients also have a TMJ problem.
