sinus infection

A sinus infection is called sinusitis. The sinuses are hollow passages in the skull between the nostril and the nasal passage. There are four major sinuses that pass through different areas of your skull. The sinuses are important for several reasons one of the most important being a defense against foreign bacteria. A problem with the sinuses can break down those defenses and the bacteria that can get in can cause an infection.

A sinus infection can cause a multitude of unpleasant symptoms. Usually it will present with a headache or pressure in the eyes, nose as well as a fever. Many people can actually confuse a sinus infection with a severe cold. A toothache can also be a sinus infection symptom, but not one most people think of. Sinus infections can often causes toothaches or even tooth sensitivity across several teeth.

A sinus infection is one of many potential sinus problems. Nasal congestion can block the sinuses and prevent drainage of mucus into the nose and mouth. This blockage causes mucus in the sinus to build up and thicken. This thick warm mucous provides an excellent and rich food source for bacteria to grow and cause inflammation. Even a fungal infection can cause sinusitis. If you are experiencing sinus infection symptoms you should see a doctor immediately.
