A sinus toothache can be caused by a sinus infection. The maxillary sinuses are located just above the back teeth and underneath the cheeks. Some of the roots of the upper back molars and premolars extend into the maxillary sinus. When the sinus exit becomes swollen, this closed cavity fills up with liquid and is predisposed to becoming infected
Sinus toothache pain can even confuse a dentist, especially if one of the upper back teeth has a very large filling or tooth decay. With sinus pressure build up from inflammation or infection, the tooth roots in the sinus can become painful and this discomfort can be confused with a dental pain. This is why so many patients with sinus problems often end up with multiple root canals.
Sinus infections are hard to treat and require longer periods of time on antibiotics than normal infections. Our office likes using tetracycline 500 milligrams four times a day for ten days when treating sinus toothaches. If the pain does not go away in ten days, a more detailed examination is performed and the patient is either treated or referred to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor.
