Soft Dentures
Soft dentures are an excellent alternative to traditional hard-fitted dentures. In the past several years a major improvement in flexible dentures has made them an alternative. Traditionally relining dentures with a soft base increases comfort at the cost of chewing efficiency. To make up for the loss of chewing efficiency, denture wearers would use dentures adhesive which causes its own problems. If you have had your dentures adjusted and they still cause you discomfort a flexible material is now an option that does not trade off the ability to eat for the comfort dentures wearers desire.
Soft dentures are generally only used when traditional complete dentures cause discomfort to the patient that cannot be solved through relining. Sometimes patients will not have a problem wearing dentures at first, yet years late discover they cant wear them without the plates hurting their gums. This could be caused by gum and bone resorption. They happens over time when the gums thin out. The thinning can cause extreme discomfort when dentures press into the gums because the gums are trapped and sandwiched between between the hard denture acrylic and underlying bone.
Soft dentures are not the same as a soft reline for traditional dentures. Soft relines use a soft putty-like substance to separate your gums from the hard acrylic in your dentures. Flexible dentures use a special flexible resin that prevents them from chafing the gums. Yet this flexible resin serves a dual purpose that allows the wearer to chew properly. The resin is formed so that it undercuts the gum ridge in your jawbone allowing the plate to stay stable while eating. It also provides a soft base that prevents the gums from being rubbed raw.
