sore gums

Sore gums are a sign that something is wrong. It's usually dues to gingivitis but it can also result from a periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation and swelling to the gingival tissues that causes them to bleed. Periodontitis is more serious since it also involves the underlying bone around the tooth.

An erupting wisdom tooth can cause sore gums. The tissues around the wisdom tooth tend to swell and catch food. There's bleeding and it's not unusual for opposing teeth to bite into the swollen and enlarged tissues. This is called pericornitis and it is a common reason for emergencies presenting to the dental office. It can be especially painful when the opposing wisdom tooth bites into the swollen gum tissue.

Mouth ulcers can cause sore gums. There are several different causes of mouth ulcers but herpes I is probably the most common. The herpes virus lives in the nerve cells inside the body and only comes out when the patient is stressed. When they come out there's an outbreak and they then retreat back into the nerve cells to sleep until the next outbreak.

Allergies and some prescription medications can cause sore gums. This is especially true of beta blockers used to treat heart disease. Trapping food, such as a popcorn husk, underneath the gums will cause them to swell and become painful.
