Sternocleidomastiod Muscle

information from the  Atlanta Dental Group PC

sternocleidomastoid

The sternocleidomastoid muscle extends from the back of the ear all the way downward to the collar bone. When it shortens, it pulls the head up and back. Unfortunately, when the sternocleidomastoid muscle goes into spasm and trigger points occur, the muscle refers pain to a number of areas in the head and neck area making the TMJ patient totally miserable.

Interestingly, the sternocleidomastoid gives information to the brain about how your head is positioned. This information helps you know where your head is and where is needs to be. Unfortunately, when the muscles dysfunctions, it can cause disorientation and TMJ dizziness.
