Surgical Tooth Extraction

surgical tooth extraction

A surgical tooth extraction is a lot more complicated that a routine dental procedure. In routine procedures, the tooth is grabbed with an oral surgery instrument and removed. It's simple and easy. However, surgical removals involve making an incision into the gums around the tooth and gently pulling the gums away from the tooth and supporting bone.

In many cases, a tooth has to be sectioned into several pieces during a surgical tooth extraction. This involves using a special stainless steel high speed bur with a very long shaft. The long shaft is necessary because the bur has to go completely through the tooth. The roots are separated and individually removed. Because the dentist knows how many roots each tooth is supposed to have, each root is found and removed.

A surgical tooth extraction often involves dental sutures but most patients call them stitches. When the gum tissue is handled extensively and can not easily be aligned back into place, sutures are used to place the gum tissue back into the proper alignment. Most stitches are made out of black silk and do not dissolve. The patient must return in a week to have the stitches removed or the gum tissue can get infected. Fortunately, taking sutures out is usually painless and quick.
