sweet tooth

Virtually everyone has a sweet tooth. Sweet foods taste great and most people have their own personal favorite candy or treat. The problem is that sweet foods generally use sugar to add that extra bit of taste. An while we do need sugar in our diets, we do not need much. Excessive consumption of sugar can cause a number of health problems, and not just oral health problems such as tooth decay the way most people think.

If you cannot keep control of your sweet tooth you may have encountered the habit forming properties of sugar. Sugar can create "sugar highs", boosts of energy from the effects of sugar. The problem with this is that when a person is coming down off the high it can lead to a feeling of depression and a lack of energy. Often the only way to remedy this is to get more sugar. This creates a Yo-Yo effect that is not good for your health.

A sweet tooth can also have very real and direct impacts on your health. While sugar can cause tooth decay it can also cause anxiety, irritability, hyperactivity and even a gain in weight. Sugar can suppress immune function, which in turn can lead to other health problems. It can create gallstones and of course diabetes. With all these potential health problems it is a good idea to control how much sugar and what kind of sugar you are consuming. A blanced healthy diet is a key to good health.

It is not a crime to indulge your sweet tooth, but it is a problem if you indulge it too much.
