Swollen Gum Treatment

swollen gum treatment

Swollen gum treatment depends on the cause of the swollen gums. As there are several possible causes for swelling gums there are also several possible treatments. Different causes often present with other symptoms. If you have swollen and bleeding gums it is most likely that you have periodontal disease, most often caused by improper oral hygiene. Believe it or not swollen gums can even occur during pregnancy and obviously oral hygiene will have little impact on that.

If you are having a problem with swollen gums and need swollen gum treatment you should schedule an appointment with your dentist for a dental examination. Your dentist will be able to properly diagnose the root of your problem and determine the best course for treatment depending on the cause. If the problem is not related to your oral health your dentist may recommend that you see another doctor. A vitamin K, B12 or C deficiency can cause swollen gums and can only be cured by getting correct amounts of vitamins every day. Anemia can cause swollen gums and cannot be treated by your dentist.

If your problem is related to a gum disease, as is likely, then your dentist can set forth a swollen gum treatment plan for you. This will require special attention to oral hygiene on the part of the patient. Smokers have a higher risk of gum disease and smoking can also cause problems for the treatment. Early stage gum disease can be treated by special mouthwashes and proper oral hygiene habits. More advanced stages of gum disease may require surgical options but still require attention to oral hygiene on the part of the patient.
