Swollen gums can be caused by a number of things and while some of these things are pretty minor and easily remedied, some present major oral health problems of which swollen gum tissue is only a minor symptom. You do not want to overreact to a small problem but at the same time you do not want to take a major problem lightly. That is why it is important to see your dentist regularly, because your dentist will be able to determine how serious the problem is and how best to treat it. Otherwise the minor problem could become a big one and a major gum problem could become disastrous.
One of the most common causes of swollen gums is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a periodontal disease caused by plaque, a sticky, slimy film of bacteria that builds up on teeth near the gum line. That causes the bacteria to irritate and infect the gums causing swelling and it can also cause bleeding of the gums. This is most often caused by improper oral hygiene and it can lead to more serious problems. If left untreated gingivitis could become worse until it develops into periodontitis, a serious gum disease that can cause teeth to fall out and requires serious treatment.
Other causes of swollen gums can be as simple as a sensitivity the toothpaste or mouthwash that you are using. Swelling of the gums can also be caused by dentures that are poorly fitted. This can often be remedied by a dentures reline. More serious causes include malnutrition or vitamin deficiency. A vitamin C deficiency, commonly known as scurvy, can cause swelling of the gums. Treatment of the swelling all depends on the cause of the problem and only a proper diagnosis by a doctor can determine the cause. If you are having such a problem it is a good idea to see your dentist.
