tartar

Tartar is another word for calculus, a hardened form of plaque that builds up on teeth. This build up is dangerous because it becomes so hard that simple brushing and flossing cannot remove it, only a professional dental cleaning from a dentist or dental hygienist can remove it. It is also a perfect platform for the growth of bacteria so it helps with the spread of plaque and more calculus. This can create serious oral health problems including cavities and gum disease.

They key to preventing tartar is good oral hygiene. Though many people don't like flossing it is important because the area between teeth is the perfect area for plaque build up because food particles can become trapped between the teeth. The fact that these areas are more difficult to clean makes them areas where plaque is more likely to build up and eventually form calculus. If it builds up below the gum line it can cause pockets of infection, the gum diseases gingivitis and eventually periodontitis.

Tartar will appear as a yellowish to brownish stain on the teeth that is extremely hard and difficult to remove. If you are noticing areas like this on your teeth you should see a dentist for a dental examination to check up on your oral health. Catching any oral health problems early is important in minimizing dental treatment and keeping your mouth healthy. It wil lalso help you keep your natural teeth for a whole lifetime.
