Teen braces are the most common type of orthodontics done. Teenagers have all their adult teeth but because young adults are still growing, moving their teeth is easy. It's also a really good time to do braces because lots of kids in their peer group are also having orthodontic care at this time and it's considered okay to do. If treatment is delayed it may never happen since most college age patients will refuse to have braces done.
There are many alternatives to teen braces. Invisalign braces are clear removable aligners that slowly position the teeth. The clear plastic aligners are changed about every two weeks until the teeth achieve their final positions. Clear ceramic brackets can be used with traditional orthodontics to help decrease the show of metal. In some cases, removable plastic appliances (different from Invisalign) can be offered in cases that are not far from ideal.
To do teen braces, it is really best when the patient's 12 year molars (second molars) have erupted into the mouth. If not, all of the teeth can be beautifully straightened and the second molars can later come into the mouth out of position. Dr. Padolsky sometimes surgically exposes the second molars to assist these teeth in erupting into the mouth sooner so they can be included in the orthodontic care.
Teen braces can be really cool. Some patients make wearing their appliances a game and often request different elastic colors at each visit. It is not uncommon to use alternating red, white and blue ligatures during the Fourth of July holidays. After completion of the orthodontic therapy it is very important that all patients wear their retainers to hold the straight teeth in their positions. Our faces change with time and so do our teeth. Wearing the retainers helps keep the teeth beautiful for many years after treatment.
