The third molar is more commonly referred to as the wisdom tooth. A molar is a tooth vital for chewing, because of its large relatively flat surfaces. Tooth eruption of the wisdom tooth does not occur until the late teens or early twenties and this makes it rather infamous. The wisdom tooth generally needs to be removed from the mouth in order to prevent oral health and orthodontic problems later on in life.
The third molar is such a problem is because the human mouth has changed to the point where there is not really enough space for it. This means that when it comes in it can put pressure on the other teeth causing the other teeth to shift out of place, a phenomenon called crowding. It can even cause a toothache if the pressure is severe enough. This lack of room in the mouth can even cause a wisdom tooth to come in sideways. A horizontally impacted wisdom tooth can create serious problems.
If your third molar has just erupted or if it is giving you problems you should see a dentist immediately. Sometimes you will not even know your wisdom tooth is giving you problems, as is the case with a horizontally impacted wisdom tooth. This is why it is important to see a dentist regularly. A dental examination involves x-rays and an x-ray picture is will be able to determine if the wisdom toothwill be a problem. Wisdom tooth extraction is a relatively simple procedure.
