Temporo-mandibular Disorders are notoriously difficult to treat and for this reason many people have had problems with TMD treatment. In many cases treatment fails to relieve the symptoms of TMD. Many people grow frustrated and angry due to constant pain that no treatment seems ro resolve and end up opting for TMJ surgery. In some cases this may work but in a surprisingly large number of cases it does not and can actually make the symptoms worse.
Temporo-mandibular Disorders are caused by problems with the jaw joints, jaw and surrounding facial muscles. The jaw joint also affects muscles in the neck which in turn can affect muscles in the back. The cause of TMD is debatable but many dentist believe that it is caused by problems with the alignment of the jaw that forces the joints out of their correct positions. This causes problems with the muscles which in turn can cause many unpleasant symptoms. TMD treatment corrects the problem while providing releif from symptoms.
Many patients think that TMD treatment is designed only to provide relief from TMD symptoms. While it is true that many treatments are designed to do exactly this there are other treatments that are designed to treat the cause of TMD. As you might see the problem here is that there is some disagreement on the cause of TMD so there are many different treatment options. Since there are different treatment options for different possible causes it becomes evident that a patient can be treated in the wrong manner.
Dr. Padolsky of the Atlanta Dental Group PC has developed a TMD treatment program that is designed to treat the cause of TMD. He has spent years dedicated to the study of TMD and this treatment plan addresses the causes and symptoms of TMD to provide relief and fix the cause. Treatment begins with a TMJ splint and jaw exercises as well as jaw massage. It does not remedy TMD problems instantly but then nothing is guaranteed to do so. Dr. Padolsky recommends TMJ surgery only as a last resort.
