Many people who have Temporo-mandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD)have wondered about their TMJ anatomy and what exactly is causing their problems. Unfortunately, while it is possible to explain the anatomy of this joint, it is only possible to explain different possibilities as to what causes TMJD. There is a great deal of debate on the subject and while it is possible to treat this disease the underlying causes still remain a bit of a mystery.
Before understanding TMJ anatomy you must first know what the Temporo-mandibular joints are. These joints are where the jaw meets the skull, just below your ears on either side of your head. Problems with the joint can cause TMJ symptoms such as; TMJ dizziness, TMJ pain, TMJ headaches, jaw popping, jaw clicking, tooth grinding, ringing in the ears known as tinnitus, difficulty swallowing and so on. These problems can in turn cause other oral health and general health problems that can adversely affect your life.
To help you understand TMJ anatomy, look a the skull above. The mandible is the jaw, where it connects to the upper jaw, temporal bone is the joint. The rounded edges at the end of the lower jaw are called condyles and these are cushioned from the skull by the articular discs, which act as shock absorbers. The important muscles are internal and external pterygoid, mylomyoid, geniohyoid and digastric muscles, which are responsible for opening and closing the mouth. The sternocleidomastoid muscles that run from just behind your ear to your collarbone can also be affected by TMJD.
