TMJ and dizziness can sometimes be related. This is not so hard to imagine when you understand that your inner ear is responsible for your sense of balance and that your Temporo-mandibular joint, is where your jaw meets your skull, just in front of your ear. TMJ dizziness can be caused by tow separate reasons, and only a doctor can give you a proper diagnosis of TMJ. If you are experiencing TMJ symptoms it is a good idea to see an experienced TMJ dentist.
There
is a great deal of debate over what causes TMJ
and TMJ symptoms. TMJ
and dizziness can be
caused by the actual Temporo-mandibular joint becoming inflamed.
This can create pressure on your inner ear that causes the dizziness.
TMJ can also cause other ear problmes like a ringing sound, called
tinnitus. Exactly what causes the inflammation
is not completely understood, but there are treatments for TMJ disorder. TMJ
mouthpieces, TMJ exercises and even TMJ surgery can all help relieve the symptoms of TMJD.
TMJ and dizziness
can also be related to the sternocleidomastoid muscles or the
SCM for short. This is the muscle that runs from your collarbone
up to your skull, just below your ear and this muscle also helps
you keep your balance. If you have a problem with this muscle
such as an injury or spasming, it can effect your sense of balance
and cause dizzy spells. This can be remedied through simple massage
and stretching of the muscles.
