tmj and fibromyalgia

TMJ and Fibromyalgia are related because 90% of the pain that temporomandibular joint dysfunction patients have is muscle pain. Patient with FM already have lots of muscle pain. Myo- means muscle and -algia means pain and myalgia means muscle pain. The word myalgia is included inside Fibromyalgia because muscle pain is its primary symptom.

It is incredible that 70% of women have temporomandibular joint dysfunction in some manner. This means that there is a very high chance that many of them have both TMJ and Fibromyalgia. Their bodies deal with their jaw joint problem as a latent problem. This means that most women have an underlying jaw joint problem that often comes and goes. It is also very probable that a women with FM will also have temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Most pain patients know that headache pain is much worse than normal body pains. Head pain impairs your ability to function and limits what patients can and can not do. FM can cause the body to distort in an attempt to avoid using painful muscles. In patients with both TMJ and Fibromyalgia, this body distortion can worsen temporomandibular joint dysfunction and its associated headaches.
