TMJ arthritis

TMJ arthritis is a common finding in Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction patients. The word ending -itis means inflammation and arthro- means joint. Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. Patients with jaw joint inflammation should seek professional dental treatment from a knowledgeable dentist trained to treat Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction.

There is a home test for TMJ arthritis. Touching an inflamed area usually causes pain. To see if you have this problem, place both of your hands over your jaw joints in front of both of your ears. Open and close a few times to feel the moving joints then keep your mouth open. Lightly press into the backs of the jaw joints and if you have pain, you probably have inflammation.

The TMJ arthritis is usually due to trauma and often reduces or is eliminated when the joint is supported with a soft guard. Unfortunately, there are many different Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction philosophies in the US. Different dentists treat the problem differently so it may take several dentists before you achieve relief.
