TMJ Headache

tmj headache

TMJ headache is usually located on the sides of the head over the temples. It is usually muscular in origin and responds well to Motrin, Advil and/or Nuprin. The pain gets worse right before menstration and during times of emotional and physical stress. Unfortunately, it is usually confused with a migraine since the pain is located in the same area. Physicians usually do not offer hands on physical diagnosis so muscular pains that must be diagnosed with the hands are often misdiagnosed. They often prescrible medicines without ever touching their patients.

Most patients with TMJ headache usually experience related pain in the neck, face, and even in the back. They hurt! They suffer from tooth grinding and sensitive teeth. Nasal allergies block up their noses and hey often suffer from a dry mouth from mouth breathing. In fact, there seem to be many medical conditions commonly associated with this disorder. It is very important to find a TMJ doctor who can help you sort these problems out and get the appropriate treatment from the appropriate doctors or many of the temporomandibular dysfunction problems will persist.

It is common for a patient with TMJ headache to also have sinus toothache problems due to nasal swelling and the accompanying backup of liquids in the nose and sinuses. The blockage forces these patients to extend their necks and to assume unusual postures to breath. Patients with temporomandibular joint disorders commonly have jaw clicking, jaw popping, and/or grating in one or both of their jaw joints. There may also be pain in the joints that can get worse with chewing or any kind of stress.

Because TMJ headache is difficult to diagnose and most patient first go to their general physicians, it is often not treated properly, so patients continue to suffer. This disorder often causes ear pain and ringing in the ears, so patients are commonly first referred to a Ear, Nose and Throat physician instead of a qualified dentist. The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being.
