tmj migraines

TMJ migraines are just as painful and debilitating as normal migraine headaches. Migraine headaches can have all sorts of triggers, including TMJ dysfunction. Most people who haven't had a migraine do not know just how debilitating it can really be. In the 1998 NFL Superbowl Terrell Davis, star running back for the Denver Broncos was sidelined due to the severity of his migraine. After that many people without migraines came to realize just how bad they can be.

Diagnosing TMJ migraines can be difficult. Most dentists are not trained to diagnose and treat TMJ and without the ability to understand what causes something, it can be difficult diagnosing and treating the problem. Migraine headaches also defy the medical fields best attempts to find a cause and therefore cure. While several medications are available that can help relieve the symptoms, a person who has migraines will generally have to deal with them for the entirety of their life.

TMJ disorder is characterized by certain key symptoms, in this case TMJ migraines. Other symptoms include general pain where the jaw meets the skull, discomfort when opening and closing the mouth, sudden locking of the jaw opening, neck pain and swelling. Also common are clicking, popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint. It is generally treated by addressing the muscle jaw pain using a removable dental appliance and nutritional program aimed at reducing muscle dysfunction.
