tmj pain relief

If you suffer from temporomandibular joint dysfunction, TMJ pain relief is something that is really important. There are primarily two types of discomfort that we see with this disorder, muscular and joint. Inflamation of the jaw muscles is called myositis and pain in the same muscles is called myalgia. Myalgia is the primary complaint in about 90% of all cases and fortunately, it is easier to treat.

Warm muscles feel better than cold ones. Applying moist warm heat to the sides of your face and slowly stretching the jaw muscles can provide some TMJ pain relief. Run some warm water into your bathroom sink and soak two face clothes in it. Be sure that the water is not burning hot. Wring the towels out and place them on your face. Many patients also take Motrin, Advil or Nuprin at the same time and with many patients, this combination really helps.

Simply stretching your muscles and massaging them with your fingers can offer some TMJ pain relief. Using two fingers, one inside the mouth pushing out and one outside of the mouth on the face pushing in, can be used in a kneading fashion. It's your own mouth so you don't have to wear latex gloves. Applying cold in the form of ice can reduce the discomfort but it cuts the circulation to the muscles and often prolongs the problem.

The best TMJ pain relief is obtained through professional treatment by a knowledgeable dentist. The reason for the problem has to be addressed, not just the symptoms. The muscles are working too hard to support an improperly oriented joint.
