TMJ splints are TMJ mouthpieces. These are dental devices used to treat Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorder, more commonly referred to as TMJD or TMJ. This is a disorder with the joint where the jaw meets the skull that can cause oral health problems like jaw pain, jaw locking, jaw clicking and TMJ headaches that can become so severe they cause TMJ migraines. One of the major problems with this disorder is that it is not completely understood and therefore there is significant debate as to what causes it and the best method of treating it is.
There are many types of TMJ splints. The different types are designed to work differently and achieve different things but in the end the ultimate goal is the same, to stop a TMJ symptom. Our Atlanta Dental Group PC TMJ dentist believes each case deserves to be analyzed and treated on it's on unique merits. A thorough dental examination is needed before treatment can begin. Most patients respond to treatment with the soft guard TMJ device.
Different types of TMJ splints work differently for different people. One person may not respond well to a treatment despite the fact that the same treatment may have worked wonders for someone else. That is why Dr. Padolsky believes in a complete examination fo each individual case as well as a multi-pronged approach to treatment. Dr Padolsky has created a TMJ treatment program that also includes TMJ exercises for the jaw as well as TMJ massage. If one type of mouthguard is not working for you, do not despair, we will work to find a treatment that works for you.
