TMJ syndrome treatment is not an exact science. Different doctors have different preferred methods of treatment and different patients show different results for the same procedures. This can make it extremely difficult to create a complete TMJ program that will provide TMJ symptom relief. While the symptoms and discomfort caused by TMJ disorder can be relieved the syndrome is never actually cured. There is debate as to what causes TMJD and until that debate is solved, treatment will work to remedy the symptoms.
TMJ syndrome treatment begins with visiting a TMJ dentist and getting a complete dental examination. This will provide x-ray pictures that will enable the dentist to examine the TMJ anatomy and your occlusion to see if anything stands out as particularly wrong. Your occlusion is the way your teeth align, and a malocclusion or "bad bite" can be the causes of your TMJ pain. From there a treatment program will be developed. TMJ surgery is a last resort and most treatment involves TMJ physical therapy and TMJ exercises. It requires time and dedication but it does work.
The TMJ syndrome treatment developed by our Atlanta TMJ dentist involves jaw exercises and TMJ massage as well as diet changes. It starts by standing in front of a well lit mirror and taking some time to watch what is happening to your jaw when you slowly open and close your mouth. The jaw of people with TMJD will open to one side. Now try opening your mouth straight. This will take some effort because the weak muscles on the bad side will not want to function correctly. Open and close correctly ten times and take a rest. Repeat this process twice. Do three sets of ten three or four times every day.
