TMJD, stand for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and it can be a very serious problem. Most people refer to it merely as TMJ but this is actually a bit of a misnomer, because this is merely referring to the joints that are on both sides of your head where your mandible, lower jaw, meets your skull. If you say TMJ you're really just talking about the joint. TMJ disorder refers to the problems that can occur with this joint, creating not only pain, but other medical issues that can affect your health.
TMJD most often presents as discomfort in your mouth in the form of jaw pain. Other problems include, teeth grinding that can cause sensitive teeth, TMJ migraines, jaw popping, and is associated with Mitral Valve Prolapse, decreased thyroid function, nasal allergies, hypoglycemia, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Any one of these can have a profound impact on your health and many can be debilitating. Unfortunately TMJ syndrome presents a number of difficulties to the medical establishment.
Many people can have TMJD and not know it, thinking that their problems are not related. Not only can it be difficult to properly diagnose it is also difficult to treat, and for several reasons. The first is that it cannot really be cured. It is treated until the TMJ symptoms are relieved, but these symptoms can return and therapy must begin over again. The second reason it sis difficult to treat is that few dentists really understand the problem and are experienced or willing to treat it. The third reason is that insurance companies are unwilling to cover the cost of treatment.
