Tooth abscess treatment is aimed at controlling and eliminating the dental infection that caused the tooth abscess. The infection is controlled with oral antibiotics and the pain is reduced with pain killers. In three to seven days, the pain and swelling goes away. Almost always, the dental infection comes from a dead tooth. Some patients ignorantly believe that if their tooth doesn't hurt, they don't need to do anything. That belief can be deadly. The dental infection will return and most certainly be worse the second time it attacks.
A dead tooth stays dead and must either be removed with a dental extraction or have a root canal. In most cases, when everything settles down, most patients decide to save the tooth with a root canal. If a patient can not afford a root canal or if the patient does not want this tooth abscess treatment, the dead tooth must be removed; there are no other options. In some cases, a chronic long term tooth abscess can eat away and destroy the surrounding bone of the tooth and sometimes the bone of the neighboring teeth also. This destruction causes an unusual type of periodontal disease. This must also include periodontal care with the hopes that once the infection is removed, the bone will return.
