Tooth bonding is cosmetic dental work that allows tooth colored material to be bonded to the surfaces of a tooth. The tooth colored material can be used to reshape a tooth, closed unwanted gaps, lengthen short teeth, cover up unwanted stains, whiten teeth, connect several teeth together and more. Many of these procedures can be done without anaesthesia so there is often no need for dental injections.
Tooth bonding was invented in the late 1970s and involves etching a tooth with phosphoric acid to create microscopic pores all over the etched surfaces. A liquid plastic is next brushing into the pores and the plastic hardened using a dental curing light. Regular dental composite materials can now permanently adhere to this surface. It's truly a modern dental miracle because prior to the invention of this technique, holes had to be drilled into a patient's tooth to hold a filling on a tooth. Worse yet, prior this procedure the only way to change the surface of a patient's tooth was to grind most of a tooth away to construct a dental crown. The only potential problem is an occasional tooth bonding loss.
Tooth bonding uses tooth colored composite resin filling materials to do things such as repairing a fractured tooth or closing a gap between two teeth. The dental composite resin can also be used to laminate or veneer natural teeth to create immediate changes instead going through the longer process of doing porcelain veneers. Some cosmetic dentists use composites to create temporary veneers to see if their patients like the new smile changes that the dentist has planned. This allows the patient to have an aesthetic trial period before the final porcelain veneers are made.
