Tooth bonding loss can happen especially when patients bite on hard foods such as hard candy, unpopped popcorn kernels and ice. In most cases, it's only the dental white filling material that pops off and the old tooth can usually be repaired once again using dental bonding techniques. This is a major disadvantage of this material compared to porcelain and metal alternatives.
Tooth bonding loss can occur when dental composite is attached to very narrow tooth surfaces. Bonding tends to break off of the tops of lower incisor teeth because of the biting forces applied to these teeth during normal chewing. If there is minimal tooth enamel remaining on the tooth surface, dental bonding is not a great alternative. Dentin does not etch and bond as well as enamel.
The most common reason for tooth bonding loss is chipping. Dental composite is softer than natural enamel and it is common to see minor cracks and chipping on this material. Fortunately, if the problem is primarily in the composite resin filling material, the tooth can usually be patched up. There is also the alternative to upgrade to porcelain veneers or all porcelain crowns.
