The tooth crown procedure is an important and often an unappreciated procedure in dentistry. A dental crown is vital to restoring a tooth's functionality after severe tooth decay has set in or a serious accident. This dental restoration can be made to look like a regular tooth through the use of porcelain crown or a gold crown can be created. A crown is needed to replace a lost tooth when a dental implant is used. The implant acts likes the roots of a real tooth while the crown is secured to a dental implant post and provides the chewing surface.
The tooth crown procedure starts with making an appointment for a dental examination to determine whether or not the crown is necessary or if the procedure is possible. If it is determined that a crown is needed your dentist will numb the tooth with local anaesthesia. This means only the tooth and surrounding area will be numb. Then the tooth must be reshaped and the surface area is reduced. Normally the required reshaping takes only about five minutes, thanks to sophisticated dental drills, high-torque hand pieces and diamond burs.
The next step in the tooth crown procedure is taking an impression of the mouth so that the crown will fit properly. Unfortunately, it can take some time for the crown to be made, often 1-2 weeks, so another dental crown appointment is made for a later date. When the crown is ready it must be placed in the mouth. It is important to make sure that the fit is corect so it may be necessary to reshape to crown. Once everything is done the porcelain is glazed and the crown is fitted and cemented into the mouth.
