Tooth Enamel

tooth enamel

Tooth enamel is the hardest biological material made and it's composed of 95% calcium minerals. It's especially beautiful in young people who have lots of surface texture on their unworn teeth. A thin layer of this natural material protects the inside of the natural crown of every tooth against the forces of chewing. This crystaline material is usually colored white but it can stain with time.

Tooth enamel is translucent, so light can partially pass through it. Some of the light is absorbed and re-emitted, which gives the tooth the qualities of an opal. The surface has a texture which partially reflects light. Unfortunately, with age the surface texture is lost and the tooth dulls. As this thinning occurs, the underlying yellow dentin begins to show more and more. Unlike the enamel, dentin has living tissue contained within its substance.

Cosmetic dentists try to mimic the color, shape, form, texture and properties of natural tooth enamel when creating a beautiful smile. This is artistically done by mixing different porcelains to create natural effects. It is especially important when matching natural teeth with porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns. The more we can recreated nature, the more beautiful the restorations are.

Unfortunately, tooth enamel dissolves in acids which are made by tooth decay bacteria. The acid dissolves the natural crystal and forms openings into the tooth. This is dramatically seen in people with bulimia. It is very important to take care of your teeth and gums. Regular dental care helps maintain your teeth and surrounding bone.
