Tooth Extraction Bleeding

tooth extraction bleeding

Tooth extraction bleeding is normal immediately after a tooth extraction and the area continues to ooze for about twenty four hours. Most dentists have their patients bite down on a folded sterile gauze. The biting pressure closes the arteries and assists with clotting. However, if the gauze is left in too long the blood clots in the cotton and when the gauze is removed, the clot rips out and the bleeding starts again. In most cases, the gauze is only needed for an hour or so.

Tooth extraction bleeding can be a real problem in patients who have uncontrolled high blood pressure. You can think of blood vessels ( arteries and veins ) as though they were garden hoses. In high blood pressure patients, the hoses have a higher pressure and the blood squirts out at a higher rate. This can be very disturbing in a surgical procedure when the dentist really needs to see what he is doing. It is very important for patients to take their blood pressure medications before a tooth extraction procedure.

Applying cold to the outside of the face over a surgical area can cut down on swelling and help decrease tooth extraction bleeding a little bit. However, when cold is applied too long over an oral surgery site, the pain can increase and the healing time can increase. These are both bad things. In very rare cases, a blood vessel is nicked or cut during a dental procedure and there is then a lot of blood real fast. Fortunately, this is rare and can usually be controlled by the dentist.
