tooth extraction during pregnancy

Tooth extraction during pregnancy seems to be a common thing. The many hormonal changes during pregnancy cause many pregnant women to have problems that they didn't have before they became pregnant. One of the things that happens is that the gingiva are much more sensitive to irritation. They swell, become inflamed, turn red, bleed and are often painful. These reactions are to the plaque surrounding the teeth.

It is very common to have gum problem around a wisdom tooth and the surrounding gums only get more aggravated while a woman is pregnant. This is the primary reason that tooth extraction during pregnancy is not an uncommon experience. Many dentists believe that pregnant women should have three or at least two dental cleanings during the time that women are pregnant. Home care should be excellent. Most dentists suggest that their patients brush and floss three times a day and excellent dental home care is even more important during pregnancy.

Of course, dentists would prefer to avoid tooth extraction during pregnancy. However, the best interests of the child must be thought of too. A mother that is in constant pain while carrying a child is stressing out her body. This is probably not healthy for the child. A tooth extraction procedure nowadays is very gentle and many patients are not even aware that their tooth has been removed. The dental anaesthetics have epinephrine in them that closes the local blood vessels and keeps the anaesthetic in the area of concern and away from the baby. Most ob/gyns allow minor oral surgery when the mother has dental pain.
