Tooth Extraction Procedure

tooth extraction procedure

The tooth extraction procedure is simple. After insuring that there are no complicating medical factors and after studying the x-rays, the dentist numbs the tooth to be removed. Fortunately, there are many different types of dental anaesthetics today and if one is not totally effective, another will probably be. Dental injections are not very painful, especially when the dentist uses topical anaesthetic ointment on the area before the injection. Dental needles today are very sharp and are disposed of immediately after being used. A sharp needle cuts easily and doesn't hurt very much.

The next step in the tooth extraction procedure, after waiting a few minutes for the dental anaesthetic to fully work, is to make a small incision in the gums around the tooth. This frees the gum tissue and helps prevent tearing when the tooth is removed. The incision also shows whether the patient is numb or not. The tooth is then carefully loosened using a dental elevator. The term is called luxation. This is done by pushing laterally and upward on one side of the tooth. In many cases all that is needed is to loosen the tooth and it comes out.

After luxation, the next step in the tooth extraction procedure is to use a dental forcep to grab onto the tooth and loosen it within its tooth socket. There are many different types of dental forceps with each being designed to remove a specific tooth in a specific area. It is really nice to have all of the different types of forceps available because it makes it much easier when you have the right one available. The forceps is able to place a significant amount of force on the tooth to finally free it from the jaw bone.
