Tooth Filling

tooth filling

The type of tooth filling used for a patient depends on the preferences of that patient. Unlike years ago, patients have many choices. In the past there was only one option, a mercury filling. It was first used in the middle 1800s before the Federal Drug Agency existed. Because dental amalgam is approximately half mercury, it is doubtful that it would be approved for use today, especially since tuna fish contaminated with only a few parts per million of mercury is banned in the US.

Cosmetic Dentistry has made white tooth filling materials popular. They're called composites and they look beautiful. Many composites are approved by the American Dental Association for use in back teeth and dentists chemically bond them to a tooth using tooth bonding. Their color blends into the natural tooth and often can not be detected. White dental filling materials are not good dental veneers, instead porcelain veneers give a more beautiful and natural appearance. However, the old method of dental bonding to cover ugly front teeth is still available.

A tooth filling was not meant to replace more than half of a tooth. As a dental restoration becomes larger, the amount of tooth holding it gets smaller and the tooth weakens. This can lead to tooth fracture or death. A dental crown is a much better dental restoration to restore large portions of a tooth. A new technique called indirect composite restorations looks promising. In this technique the problem tooth is prepared and an impression is taken. A model is next constructed and the composite is made on the model instead of directly on the patient. The indirect composite filling can be specially hardened much more than if it was placed directly into the tooth.
