Tooth grinding while sleeping can sound truly horrible. Tooth grinding in child is actually a fairly common occurrence. Tooth grinding is called bruxism. Over the years this problem can flatten the teeth. It can create problems because this can eventually effect the nerve canals. This can cause severe toothache pain.
The symptoms of tooth grinding in child are much the same as with adults. The sound made during grinding is the biggest and most immediately obvious clue. This most often occurs at night. It is also possible to see a flattening of the teeth, most obvious with the cupids, what most people think of as the vampire teeth. Bruxism will leave teeth extremely sensitive to hot and cold. Over time notches can develop in the roots of these teeth. This is called abfraction.
While it may sound horrible and seem like a problem, tooth grinding in child is generally not something to worry too much about. In most children bruxism does not last for all that long, as with many other things, they grow out of it. Baby teeth are not meant to last forever, and while it is important to care of them, it would take some very serious tooth grinding to affect them before they were meant to fall out.
